About Us

The Sydney Jewish Writers’ Festival (SJWF) aims to celebrate the richness of Australian and world-wide Jewish writing, and to promote the talents of writers. It is a biennial event and was first held in 2006 with an attendance of 300 people. In 2008 attendance increased to 500. It is anticipated that 2010 will attract over 600.

Objectives of the Festival include:
• showcasing writers who embrace their Jewish identity and/or who write on Jewish themes, regardless of their personal backgrounds.
• promoting the talents and the ideas of writers by introducing them to audiences who have not yet read their writing and by enabling those who have read their work to meet the author behind the story, idea or research.
• exposing the NSW Jewish community to the range of subjects and ideas which are explored in contemporary Jewish writing.
• creating for the NSW Jewish community a meaningful cultural experience and connection to its cultural heritage.

The SJWF is a unique experience in the Jewish community across Australia and is increasingly becoming a major event on the cultural and educational calendar of our community.

The SJWF is a project of Encounters@Shalom, the education department of The Shalom Institute, which runs quality educational and cultural programs for adults of all ages from across the entire Jewish community.
