MORE ABOUT THE SESSIONS:

Creating Characters

There's a novel in each of us; we just need someone to help bring it out.  If you're an aspiring writer or interested in how novels are written, these three published authors will tell you how they transform their ideas into wonderful literature.

Issues Through a Writer's Prism

One presenter is a biographer, one is a journalist, and one is a historian.

Each of them sifts the evidence before them into the written form, establishing and defining the issues through the prism of their personal vision and professional tools.

From Fact to Fiction

There’s no fiction stranger than real life, and Diane, Arnold and Leah will give you an insight into how they write between the two.

Finding Inspiration

What motivates a writer? Is it personal tragedy, the search for meaning, the quest to define and express one’s identity? These are inspired and inspiring writers. Hear what motivates them and be moved by the power of their writing.

Writing Workshop for Children

Bernard Cohen has taught creative writing to budding writers of all ages. Young people from his workshops have published their writing on websites, written books, stories and poems, and won writing competitions. Now it’s your turn.

The Art of Writing and Publishing

A session for budding writers or for those interested in the next generation of Australian Jewish writing. Hear from two of the best, how you can transform ideas into writing and writing into publication.

Children's Writing

Four of our finest writers for kids will read from their magical stories and tell you the innermost secrets of why their books are infinitely more satisfying than Television, Hollywood or Computers.

From All Angles: Wordsmiths and their Genres

So many want to write, so few actually manage to be published. Three of Australia’s finest wordsmiths tell you how they transform their thoughts into writing and why they choose the genre they do in which to express themselves.

Poetry: Shall We Meditate on Truth?

Three celebrated poets will deal with the very essence of their craft and demonstrate how they put into a few carefully chosen words their innermost thoughts and perception of truth.

The Shoah: Two Generations On

Two generations on, there is Holocaust denial and renewed antisemitism; there is also serious reflection on the lessons of the Shoah. Three historians reflect on the current state of Holocaust research, memorialising and education in Australia.

The Many Languages of Jewish Writing

From the nostalgia of Yiddish to the richness of Hebrew literature, our three creative experts share their insights into the breadth of Jewish writing. There’s something magical and eternal about Jewish writing in any language. Come and hear why.

Mothers & Fathers

Of all the central characters in Jewish writing, mothers and fathers form the vortex of the emotional whirlwind. Find out why from these three wonderful writers.

This session proudly sponsored by: Murdoch Books

Identity and Belonging

Jews in Israel and the Diaspora. Jews in England and South Africa and Australia. Where do we belong....truly belong? Our identity is a large part of our being. Come and hear why.

Our Depiction of the 'Other'

How often have you read a work of literature where the Jew is depicted as ‘the other’ ? Find out how Jewish writers have responded to the causes of ‘others’ in South Africa and Australia.

Gala Event

Two of the finest minds you’ll ever hear go head to head. When they agree, you’ll be thrilled. When they disagree, it’ll be a debate you’ll never forget.

Extraordinary Courage

In the Shoah, just surviving required extraordinary courage. Yet these stories continue to amaze.

Interviews - Writing the Holocaust

Tom became internationally famous with ‘Schindler’s Ark’. Daniel with ‘Lost’. Two great writers from vastly different  Background discuss their work, their passions and their ideologies.

Living Memories; Creating Memories

One of Australia’s leading academics on the Shoah and memory, will converse with two survivors, who have struggled with their memories to commit them to writing, and a younger writer, who has been inspired by and drawn from the memories of earlier generations.

Questions of History, Morality and Law

Ever since the days of Moses, Jews have been grappling with questions of morality and legality. Three brilliant people will discuss Pope Pius XII and the Shoah, multiculturalism in Australia and Israel, Law as a moral force, and much more.

Interview: Shifra Horn

Shifra is one of the best loved novelists in Israel, now growing in reputation throughout the world. She’s passionate, funny and irreverent. Hear her with the ABC’s Rachel Kohn.

Great Writing that Changed the World

Which writing has changed the world? What is the most influential book of all time and who are the most important writers? Israeli and Australian intellectuals suggest Primo Levi; Maimonides; Spinoza; the Prophets….
